# Double Consciousness

In The Souls of Black Folk, Du Bois described double consciousness as the experience of seeing oneself through one's own perspective and through a society structured by racial contempt. The concept captured both a divided self-understanding and the possibility of a richer critical vision.

The book joined sociology, history, autobiography, music, and political argument. Its account of the color line became one of Du Bois's most enduring contributions to social thought.
