Data, Kepler, and Credit

Kepler joined Tycho in Prague and inherited access to his observations after Tycho’s death. Mars data forced Kepler to abandon circles for ellipses.

Their relationship was difficult and unequal, but the scientific result was cumulative: Tycho’s measurements and Kepler’s mathematical persistence were both indispensable.
