# The Square Deal and the Modern Presidency

Roosevelt treated the president as a chief steward who could act unless the Constitution explicitly prohibited it. His Square Deal agenda used federal authority in disputes involving corporations, railroads, labor, food, and public welfare.

He did not reject large business as such; he sought national supervision and a balance among competing interests. This approach helped make the presidency a more visible center of policy leadership.
