# Conservation and Public Land

Roosevelt created the U.S. Forest Service and used statutory and executive authority to establish national forests, wildlife reserves, parks, and monuments. His administration protected roughly 230 million acres.

This conservation legacy preserved ecosystems and public access, but federal designation could also ignore or restrict Indigenous peoples whose stewardship and claims predated the United States. Public land history includes protection and dispossession together.
