# Superflat and Japanese Visual History

Murakami developed Superflat as a visual and critical language connecting the shallow space of historical Japanese painting with contemporary animation, comics, and consumer graphics. The concept also questions hierarchies separating elite and popular forms.

His images draw on Buddhist figures, scroll composition, Edo painting, kawaii characters, and otaku culture without treating tradition as fixed. Art history becomes material for remix and argument.
