# Identity and Diaspora

Hall treats cultural identity as a positioning rather than an essence fixed outside history. Identities are made through representation, memory, migration, difference, and unequal relations of power. This approach made diaspora especially important: belonging can involve several histories at once and is continually reconstructed rather than simply recovered.
