Hall's encoding/decoding model rejects the idea that media messages move intact from producers to passive audiences. Production builds meanings through institutional assumptions and cultural codes, while audiences interpret from their own social positions. A reading can therefore align with, negotiate, or oppose a message's preferred framework.
