# Freedom, Family, and the Law

Truth escaped slavery in 1826 after her enslaver failed to honor a promised release. She later went to court to recover her young son, who had been sold illegally out of New York.

That legal struggle placed family integrity at the center of freedom. Her later Narrative turned experiences of slavery, separation, faith, and self-emancipation into evidence for abolition.
