# Abolition, Preaching, and Public Speech

After taking the name Sojourner Truth in 1843, she traveled as a preacher and speaker. Her public presence joined biblical argument, personal experience, wit, song, and direct challenges to slavery and racial injustice.

Because Truth dictated rather than wrote many texts, surviving accounts often pass through editors and reporters. Her public thought must therefore be reconstructed with attention to who recorded and reshaped her words.
