# Racing and Independent R&D

Honda treated racing as a demanding test of engineering capability and pursued international competition while the company was still young. In 1960 Honda created a separate R&D organization so experimentation could continue beyond the founder's individual direction; later teams produced advances including the CVCC low-emission engine.
