# Trial and Death

Athens convicted Socrates in 399 BCE on charges concerning the city's gods and the corruption of the young. Plato's defense speech presents him as unwilling to stop examining himself and others even to avoid punishment; the exact historical speech cannot be recovered from the literary account.
