Benedict presented cultures as selective configurations: communities emphasize some possible values and practices and combine them into recognizable patterns. Comparison could reveal variation without arranging societies on a single ladder of advancement. Later anthropologists also challenged the framework's tendency to portray cultures as more unified than lived differences may warrant.
