Anthropology in Public Life

Benedict applied anthropology to public problems, including a critique of scientific racism and wartime research conducted when fieldwork in Japan was impossible. That work showed the reach of cultural interpretation beyond academic field sites, while its distance methods and government setting require critical attention to evidence, wartime aims, and national generalization.
