Merton helped establish the sociology of science as a field examining how institutions, rewards, norms, and historical conditions shape research. His work analyzed the ethos of science and the distribution of recognition among researchers.

Concepts such as the Matthew effect describe how prior prestige can accumulate into further advantage. Merton’s archive also contains projects and manuscripts showing the empirical breadth of this research program.
