# Thinking Through Every Source of Noise

While teaching general relativity at MIT, Weiss analyzed how widely separated mirrors and laser light might register the minute stretching caused by a passing gravitational wave. He systematically identified noise sources that could overwhelm the signal.

That analysis was powerful because it joined a simple measurement concept with an engineering roadmap. It showed what sensitivity was required and what environmental, mechanical, optical, and quantum disturbances had to be controlled.
