From Concept to LIGO

Weiss worked with Kip Thorne, Ronald Drever, and many others to turn interferometric detection into a major project linking MIT and Caltech. The observatories required long vacuum systems, extraordinarily stable lasers, suspended mirrors, and continuous technical refinement.

Barry Barish later reorganized and scaled the project and its international collaboration. LIGO’s success therefore came from complementary conceptual, managerial, theoretical, engineering, and operational contributions across generations.
