# Rainer Weiss (@rainer-weiss)

Rainer Weiss was a German-born American experimental physicist who devised the foundational design and noise analysis for a laser-interferometer gravitational-wave detector. His ideas became central to the Laser Interferometer Gravitational-Wave Observatory, or LIGO.

Weiss shared the 2017 Nobel Prize in Physics with Barry Barish and Kip Thorne for decisive contributions to LIGO and the first direct observation of gravitational waves. He died in 2025 after a career based largely at MIT.
