# Commonwealth and Decolonization

Elizabeth’s accession came while the British Empire was rapidly contracting. During her reign, many colonies became independent, and the Commonwealth evolved as a voluntary association containing republics as well as realms retaining the monarch.

Royal tours and personal relationships supported that transition’s official narrative, but ceremony cannot resolve colonial histories. The monarchy’s wealth, symbols, archives, and constitutional presence remain subjects of debate across different societies.
