Taste, Distinction, and Symbolic Power

Distinction examines taste as socially patterned rather than simply personal. Preferences in food, art, music, and lifestyle classify objects while also classifying the people who express them.

Symbolic power operates when historically produced classifications are recognized as natural or legitimate. Bourdieu’s analysis connects cultural judgment to struggles over authority without claiming that every preference can be read directly from class position.
