Animal Liberation argues that the capacity to suffer gives nonhuman animals interests that deserve moral consideration. Singer challenges the practice of discounting those interests merely because the beings affected belong to another species.

His later Animal Liberation Now revisits that case in light of contemporary animal agriculture and experimentation. Princeton describes the original book as widely credited with helping set the modern animal movement in motion.
