The Parthenon and related Acropolis works expressed civic religion, artistic ambition, and Athens’s claim to leadership after the Persian wars. Their coordinated architecture and sculpture remain central evidence for the period.

The building program also depended on resources available through Athenian leadership of the Delian League. Cultural achievement and imperial extraction therefore belong in the same account.
