Samuelson sought common mathematical structures beneath different economic problems, especially constrained optimization and comparative statics. His Foundations of Economic Analysis showed how equilibrium conditions and responses to changed parameters could be studied systematically. This unification raised analytical precision while leaving empirical adequacy dependent on each model's assumptions.
