# Still Life and Pictorial Space

Still life gave Cézanne controllable arrangements of fruit, cloth, vessels, and furniture. He used them to test weight, interval, color relation, and the unstable boundary between depth and surface.

Objects remain recognizable while the space holding them becomes deliberately tense. Their humble familiarity makes the structural experiment especially visible.
