Figuration and Interdependence

A figuration is a shifting pattern of interdependent people. Elias used the concept to move beyond a rigid choice between individual agency and social structure: individuals form relationships, but those relationships also shape what individuals can do and become. Power is therefore relational and may change as dependencies change.
