# A Cumulative Revolution

Heliocentric ideas existed in antiquity, and Copernicus drew on Greek, Islamic, and European astronomical traditions. His achievement was a new comprehensive synthesis, not creation from nothing.

Later elliptical orbits, telescopic evidence, and gravitational theory changed the model profoundly. The Copernican revolution was therefore a multigenerational process.
