# Microcredit and Grameen

Grameen Bank offered small, collateral-free loans to borrowers—especially rural women—who were excluded from conventional finance. Group-based practices and repeated lending substituted social and repayment relationships for traditional collateral. The model demonstrated that poor borrowers could be bank clients, while later evidence showed that microcredit's effects vary and are not a universal route out of poverty.
