# Consumption and Permanent Income

The permanent-income hypothesis proposes that households base consumption more on expected long-run resources than on temporary income movements. The distinction between permanent and transitory income helped explain why short-run and cross-sectional saving patterns differed and became a foundation for later consumption research.
