# Governing New York City

Bloomberg served as New York City’s mayor for twelve years, beginning shortly after the September 11 attacks. His administration emphasized management by indicators and pursued initiatives spanning public health, education, infrastructure, sustainability, and economic development.

That record is best understood as an ambitious and contested experiment in technocratic city government. It produced influential policy models, especially in public health and climate planning, while also generating debate over executive power, policing, inequality, and whose experience is represented by citywide metrics.
