The Saha Ionization Equation
Atoms in a hot gas lose electrons at rates determined by temperature, pressure, and ionization energy. Saha formulated the equilibrium relation that predicts the proportions of successive ionization states.
Applied to stellar atmospheres, the equation explained why spectral lines change across stellar classes. Differences in spectra could reflect physical conditions, not simply different elemental inventories.
