Weber investigated how religious ideas could shape economic conduct. His Protestant ethic thesis connected forms of disciplined, this-worldly asceticism with habits of vocation, calculation, and reinvestment associated with modern Western capitalism.

The argument was not that Protestant belief alone created capitalism. It was a comparative historical account of how ideas and material interests interacted in a particular development.
