Victory over Argentina in the 1982 Falklands War strengthened Thatcher politically. She worked closely with Ronald Reagan yet recognized Mikhail Gorbachev as a negotiating partner. Her defense of British sovereignty and increasingly confrontational position on European integration contributed to divisions that ended her premiership.
