# Gender and Comparative Fieldwork

Research by Mead and collaborators in New Guinea compared gender expectations, kinship, and socialization across communities. The work challenged the assumption that one society’s division of masculine and feminine roles represented a universal biological pattern.

Her archive preserves notes and media from these projects, making it possible to study both the findings and the historical practices through which anthropological knowledge was produced.
