Mead examined how communities organize the transition from childhood to adulthood and how expectations shape personality and behavior. Coming of Age in Samoa made this culture-and-development argument widely known, although its methods and conclusions later became the subject of substantial scholarly debate.

Her enduring contribution is best stated cautiously: she made cross-cultural evidence central to debates over which aspects of development are socially patterned.
