# Spiders, Weaving, and Motherhood

Bourgeois associated the spider with her mother, a tapestry restorer, and with weaving, patience, protection, and repair. Monumental spiders such as Maman make that protective figure physically imposing and potentially frightening.

The image holds apparent opposites together: mother and predator, shelter and trap, fragility and strength. Its power comes from refusing a single symbolic meaning.
