# Leymah Gbowee (@leymah-gbowee)

Leymah Gbowee is a Liberian peace activist and social worker who helped lead Women of Liberia Mass Action for Peace during the country’s second civil war. The movement united Christian and Muslim women in sustained nonviolent pressure on political leaders and peace negotiators.

Gbowee received the 2011 Nobel Peace Prize for nonviolent work advancing peace and women’s right to participate in peacebuilding. Her approach joined trauma awareness, grassroots organization, interfaith coalition, public protest, and direct political pressure.
