Solidarity and Martial Law

Wałęsa emerged from the 1980 Gdańsk shipyard strike and negotiated agreements recognizing an independent union. Solidarity grew into a national movement before the communist government imposed martial law in 1981, outlawed the union, and detained Wałęsa and thousands of others.
