# Negotiated Democratic Transition

Persistent organizing and economic crisis led to the 1989 Round Table negotiations and partially free elections, which Solidarity decisively won. Wałęsa's willingness to bargain with communist authorities enabled a largely peaceful transfer of power, though critics on the right later condemned aspects of the compromise.
