Displacement and Political Formation

Khaled was born in Haifa in 1944 and became a refugee during the 1948 war. Her later political formation took place within Palestinian nationalist organizations and eventually the Marxist-Leninist PFLP.

That history helps explain the cause with which she identified, but it does not settle the ethics of the tactics she adopted. Explanation and justification are distinct, especially where civilians were deliberately used as leverage.
