# Independence and State-Building

Lee helped found the People's Action Party, won self-government, pursued merger with Malaysia, and then led an unexpectedly independent Singapore after separation in 1965. His government prioritized security, multiracial citizenship, administrative capacity, housing, schools, public health, and international economic access.
