Authorship and the Daodejing

Traditional accounts identify Laozi with an ancient sage named Lao Dan, but those biographies are late and inconsistent. Excavated manuscripts and textual variation support a gradual formation of overlapping sayings before the Daodejing reached a relatively stable form.
