Helping Make LIGO Possible

From the 1970s onward, Thorne helped develop the scientific case for laser-interferometer detection and built a Caltech group focused on gravitational waves. The work included source modeling, data-analysis foundations, and strategies for controlling detector noise.

LIGO was never a three-person achievement: it depended on decades of work by large teams of scientists, engineers, technicians, institutions, and funders. Thorne’s Nobel recognition represents a decisive leadership contribution within that collaboration.
