# Langley and West Computing

Johnson began work in 1953 at the National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics, NASA's predecessor. She joined Langley's segregated West Computing unit, where Black women mathematicians performed calculations for aeronautics research, and she was soon assigned to flight-research work that became a permanent position.
