# Gaul, Army, and Political Power

Caesar’s campaigns in Gaul greatly expanded Roman control and produced wealth, prestige, and an army personally attached to its commander. His own Commentaries shaped how Roman audiences understood those wars.

Military success became political leverage in a Republic whose institutions struggled to govern conquest. Caesar’s crossing into Italy with troops turned competition among elites into open civil war.
