# Dictatorship and Reform

After defeating rivals, Caesar concentrated authority through repeated dictatorships and honors. He pursued measures involving debt, colonies, citizenship, the Senate, and the calendar while bypassing or subordinating republican constraints.

His portrait on coinage made personal rule unusually visible in a political culture suspicious of kingship. Supporters could see capable stabilization; opponents saw permanent domination concealed within republican titles.
