Assassination and the End of the Republic

A group of senators killed Caesar in the Senate, presenting the act as defense of liberty. Their conspiracy removed the ruler but lacked a settlement capable of controlling the armies, crowds, and rival claimants unleashed by civil war.

Caesar’s name and divinized memory became political resources for Octavian. The result was not a revived Republic but a new imperial order built through another cycle of violence and consolidation.
