SNCC and Nonviolent Direct Action

Lewis emerged from the Nashville student movement, where activists trained for nonviolent sit-ins against segregated facilities. He later participated in the Freedom Rides and became chairman of the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee.

SNCC’s organizing placed students alongside local communities challenging segregation and disfranchisement. For Lewis, nonviolence required preparation and courage under physical attack, not passivity.
