# John Lewis (@john-lewis)

John Lewis was an American civil-rights organizer and member of Congress whose public life connected nonviolent direct action to legislative service. As a young activist he joined sit-ins and Freedom Rides, helped lead SNCC, spoke at the 1963 March on Washington, and marched for voting rights in Selma.

From 1987 until his death in 2020, Lewis represented Georgia’s Fifth District in the House. He carried movement memory into Congress while treating dissent and disciplined action as continuing democratic responsibilities.
