Standard Oil coordinated refining, barrels, storage, transportation, marketing, and related production at enormous scale. Cost control, standardized quality, reinvestment, acquisitions, and preferential transportation arrangements strengthened its position. The same integration that improved reliability and efficiency could disadvantage rivals and convert economic scale into bargaining and political power.
