The 1972 Experiment

Clauser and graduate student Stuart Freedman produced entangled photon pairs from calcium atoms and measured their polarizations through differently oriented filters. Their results violated a Bell inequality and agreed with quantum mechanics.

The experiment retained detection and settings loopholes, which later teams addressed with better sources, switching, and detectors. Its importance was demonstrating that Bell’s proposal was experimentally workable and scientifically productive.
