Bell showed that local hidden-variable theories impose limits on correlations between separated measurements. Clauser, Michael Horne, Abner Shimony, and Richard Holt formulated the CHSH inequality in a form real experiments could test.

The advance linked a philosophical dispute about quantum mechanics to countable laboratory outcomes. It specified what correlations would distinguish quantum predictions from a broad class of local realist explanations.
